New Year, New Design

It is officially the start of my second year as a Graphic design undergrad! Crazy how time flies. Today I began Visual Communications 204 with instructor Tim Hossler and I couldn't be more excited. There is obvious creative energy flowing around the room and I can't wait to dig deeper into my growing expressive senses and learn more about the design world. In class, we went over our first project of the semester - one intensely similar to a tedious project from last school year. Nevertheless, I think it's going to be a great year.

Wayfinding Project Reflections 3

Over the weekend, my group and I got together two different times to work and finish up our project. We basically put the whole powerpoint presentation together. We edited the videos from our testing, put all the info together into the powerpoint, and rehearsed what each person is to say. I think we've worked really hard on this project and the results look great! Hopefully, the presentations will go very well tomorrow. All that is left to do is to put together my Process PDF, which is due on Thursday. I'll upload some pictures of our project in my next blog!

Wayfinding Project Reflections 2

So far, this project has consisted of Richard Branham coming to class every day and talking to us all about our progress. We've had a lot of time to present our ideas but not a lot of time to work as a group. My group has gotten together outside of class a couple times to gather ideas and take pictures of our location. We are planning on testing our problem at the Rec center sometime this week and then begin working on our presentation.

Wayfinding Project Reflections

It's the start of a new semester and I am excited to participate in the BDS 102 course. I had a lot of fun and learned a great amount last semester, so I am certain I will feel the same by the time the year is over. For our first project, Richard Branham has introduced what 'wayfinding' is. Our project is centralized around this idea and technique. It took a while for me to absorb all of this new info. There is quite a lot of steps and thinking that go into this. I think it's a little confusing, especially because Professor Branham and most of the other class instructors explain the idea differently (the instructors usually in more of a basic, understandable way). However, I'm beginning to feel comfortable with the project and am aware of what is expected. I am in a group with Heather Boone, Lauren Lawton, and Mackenzie Eveland. We have decided to focus our wayfinding study on how to navigate the KU rec center. We chose one new student who has never been to the rec before to find her way to the bicep machine. When presenting our project, we hope to make this process a bit more clear by adding signs, landmarks, and other navigating tools to better this journey. Yesterday, Heather and I went to the rec to take pictures of the machine, the different parts and rooms of the whole building, and took a video of us walking to the machine from the front desk. Our next step is to start planning and developing the other tools (signs, paths, reference maps) that will help the user.

Assignment 5 - Reflections 2

I recently took photos of the process that I have so far on my lamp shade. I have done 20 skins as well as 9 refined models of possible constructions. Right now, I am pretty certain that I will continue developing the spiraled, draping model as my final.

Assignment 5 Reflections

I'm enjoying this project so far. It is very different from most of our other projects we've done this past semester. I like how it is pretty crafty and requires a lot of creative skill. I'm happy with the way my skins have turned out and am expecting to come up with some cool structures for the lamp shade. So far, I will experiment with a spiral form, a flower shape, and a cylinder shape. The skins that I will work on are fringing, slicing, poking, and crumbling. I hope to come up with cool and innovative lamp shade designs!
